Total Physical Response (TPR)

Those are some instructions can be introduced to our students by using TPR.

What is TPR?

One technique that is often used in one form or another EFL (English Foreign Language) classroom is Total Physical Response (TPR) . An example of TPR is for teacher to give instruction in English first combined with actions and then give the same instructions again without the action.

The children show the same understanding by following these instructions without needing to speak. However many teachers in the Asia EFL classroom quite understandably question the validity of TPR in its original form because it does not give children enough opportunities to speak so they modify it or just use it for particular language target.

In my opinion : students in TPR has the lead
role as a listener and doer,
    students listen attentively
    and respond physically to
    commands given teacher.
#Advantages: 1. Easy and light in
terms of language use, and it
    also contains elements of
    action games that can relieve
    stress on the students,
    2. Describing verbal learning
    development of children.
    #Disadvantages: language
    learning methods tend to be
    organized in coordination
    command
    🙂

I think with teaching learning TPR make the student more easly to study about english in the classroom and they can be study joyful without bored in every material. The student will be undertand and quickly respond with the material is present by teacher. There are games or many kinds of song can be easy to student to get words in english,so many advantages from teaching student in TPR

in my opinion: using this way of teaching students in the classroom TPR, the children will understand the instructions the teacher without speaking and without the need to ask the teacher if the purpose of the instruction, after repeated several times by the teacher, they will respond actively on the instructions even without any action.
students would be very happy because along with his active role in responding to the teacher’s instructions.
This technique can also be an element of the game so that children do not get bored in learning. children can take turns doing the instruction.

TPR (Total Physical Response) This technique is suitable for teachers of children aged 5 to 7. because using these techniques can train intelligence and respond quickly and indirectly children can memorize English vocabulary especially without seeing the dictionary for each vocabulary spoken by the teacher can be practiced directly.

I think TPR technique is the good ways for children to study English. Because as we know, young cjildren about 5-9 years old. They like to move their body movement. This techinique can be the student more active and improve their motor skill. But this technique doesn’t have opportunity for student to speak in English. They just do the intruction. And this technique can not use for high school. It can be able use for children or young learners only.

    Assalamu’alaikum…

On friday discussed the subject Pshicolinguistic TPR, so it’s still fresh in my memory about TPR.

Total physical response (TPR) is a language-teaching method developed by James Asher, a professor emeritus of psychology at San José State University. It is based on the coordination of language and physical movement. In TPR, instructors give commands to students in the target language, and students respond with whole-body actions.

The method is an example of the comprehension approach to language teaching. Listening serves a dual purpose; it is both a means of understanding messages in the language being learned, and a means of learning the structure of the language itself. Grammar is not taught explicitly, but is induced from the language input.

Asher developed TPR as a result of his experiences observing young children learning their first language. He noticed that interactions between parents and children often took the form of speech from the parent followed by a physical response from the child. Asher made three hypotheses based on his observations: first, that language is learned primarily by listening; second, that language learning must engage the right hemisphere of the brain; and third, that learning language should not involve any stress.

Total physical response is often used alongside other methods and techniques. It is popular with beginners and with young learners, although it can be used with students of all levels and all age groups.

    Honorable my lecturer Ms. resti,

I like using this method because the children tend to be imaginative and creative, they liked learning through movement and games. I usually use this method when teaching elementary school. But a lot of things to consider. Some of them:
    1. At the time of introducing the English vocabulary should be start of the concrete things before heading the abstract things.
    2. Do not just rely on verbal but gestures.
    3. Teachers should use clear verbal instructions
    4. Creating an atmosphere of fun and happiness.

    Wassalaam wr.wb

      Respectable our majesty Ms. Resty,,

In my opinion, Teacher who use TPR typically use it together with a variety of their activities and technique. it most often used in introducing the new vocabularies and i like use this method in teaching my students. The teacher direct and the students act in response. the teacher gives command as himself performs and the students perform action and it is very interesting for me.

In TPR, Commands are an easy way to get learners to move about loosen up, for the example: when we say ‘sit dawn, stand up, open the window, close the window, ect’

Besides, i use this teaching typical besause i think that listening should develop first before speaking.

    Assalamu’alaikum,,,
on my mind TPR is a good technique for teaching and learning for young learners. It can help the students for understanding the instructions that given from teacher. It’s like non verbal language (body language) because this technique use physical action when teacher give some instructions without speak. It makes easy for students in studying to understand the meaning and instructions from teacher. It can improve their mind in studying. But TPR also has a lack that can make the students speechless in studying. It can make the students lazy to speak and doesn’t grow up their speaking skill.

According to Richards J in his Approaches and Methods in LanguageTeaching, TPR is defined:
“a language teaching method built around the coordination of speech and action; it attempts to teach language through physical (motor) activity”.
So according to my method of TPR (Total Physical Response) is a compiled language learning method on coordination command (command), speech (speech) and motion (action), and trying to teach language through physical activity (motor).
The learning method “Total Physical Response” is designed specifically to enhance the students’ skills in speaking English TPR method is very easy and light in terms of language use, and it also contains elements of the game so that movement can relieve stress on students because of the problems encountered in studies especially when learning a foreign language, and also to create a positive mood on learners to facilitate learning so as to improve students’ skills in English teaching.
In the process of teaching and learning using the TPR lot of activities that can be done by teachers and students of which is by way of dialogue or conversation (conversational Dialogue) and Role Playing (Role Play).

I think the Total Physical Response (TPR) is great for the implementation of the student in the learning process because the Total Physical Response (TPR) was able to cultivate the mindset that children can develop rapidly.
pembelajarn method like this is able to raise the students to think and respond quickly
so that students are able to manage it well,
This method also has the advantage either for the teacher
and this method such as teaching non-verbal language (body language) because when this technique uses physical action if the teacher gives some instructions without speaking to students directly.
making it easier for students to follow the instructions that have been given by the instructor.
as Total Physical Response (TPR) helps students to be more active in learning English and students are not too difficult to understand,
and not saturate the students themselves.
even the use of Total Physical Response (TPR) is easy and light in his use of language and an element of play while learning so that students do not get bored with what he learned,
and Total Physical Response (TPR) is also often used by the role of parents when I was at home the same thing with teachers in schools
and Total Physical Response (TPR) also helps students to more easily understand the English language.
TPR well used by students 5-9 years to increase its memory
when teachers give what to learn.
Total Physical Response (TPR) also allows both the student and the instructor in order to interact properly when learning takes place.

This method good for khinestetic pupil. Besides, pupil can be easy to remember the words. But, using TPR , pupils can’t express their own thoughts in a creative way .

    1. Fun and Easy: Students enjoy activity!
    2. Simple TPR activities do not require a great deal of preparation on the part of the teacher.
    3. TPR is inclusive and works well a class with mixed ability levels.
    4. Good for kinesthetic learners who need to be active in class.
    5. Good tool for building vocabulary.
    6. Actions help build connections in the brain.
    7. Helps learners achieve fluency faster by immersing learners in activities that involve them in situational language use.
    8. Good instructional practice for ESL’s in their silent period.
    9. Works well for child and adult learners.

in my opinion miss : TPR is Fun learning means entertaining and enjoyable learning to student. Because this method is easy learning means free from too much worried and no need to give a big effort. If the two words combined it means that the learning should be entertaining and enjoyable also less difficulties and without any great effort. TPR is a method where the children will find it fun to learn English. Then TPR involving students in physical activity. Learning English also can be through using games, song, picture and role play. The activities used in TPR are activity which less effort and less difficulties. Student also like to do activity such as sing a song, play some games, match a picture and also play a role play. Teaching using TPR will create a fun and interesting conditions in a classroom. The children will not be bored and frustrated because they are learning in fun away. If they study in fun and interesting way, they will find it easy to absorb and receive the material.
as a teacher of English we should be able to use learning methods based on PAIKEM, so that the learning process more effective and enjoyable.

In my opinion : TPR is method that focuses on two systems, namely; motoric and auditory system. when the teacher give the instruction to their student. Student have to listen carefully and immediately they do what the instruction will be said. This method makes the students involved in the learning because inevitably they have to follow the instructions that given from the teacher. With these, students would be more easily absorb the lessons and knowledge which they’re have gotten are stored in their long term memory. Therefore the method is very effective.

The problem is how to teach English to the early childhood? Of course while using the principle that early childhood learning to play that learning must be tailored to the child’s developmental level.

I think TPR (Total Physical Response) is an excellent method of providing the comprehensible input that students need to acquire the language because:
 Can n encourages the students to stop translating and to just respond to the English words they hear; it makes the response automatic
 Can avoids spelling related pronunciation problems
 Can allows the students to focus on and manipulate physical objects, which can help them to relax and reduce their anxiety about the language
 Make a provides instant feedback to the teacher about the student’s level of comprehension
 Allows the teacher to immediately tailor the lesson to the individual student’s needs
 Gves the students a sense of accomplishment, as they can see their immediate progress

Total Physical Response (TPR) is a language teaching method built around the coordination of speech and action; it attempts to teach language through physical (motor) activity. Developed by James Asher, a professor of psychology at San Jose State University, California, it draws on several traditions, including developmental psychology, learning the¬ory, and humanistic pedagogy, as well as on language teaching proce¬dures proposed by Harold and Dorothy Palmer in 1925. Total Physical Response is linked to the “trace theory ” of memory in psychology, which holds that the more often or the more intensively a memory connection is traced, the stronger the memory association will be and the more likely it will be recalled. Retracing can be done verbally (e.g., by rote repetition) and/or in association with motor activity. Combined tracing activities, such as verbal rehearsal accompanied by motor activity, hence increase the probability of suc¬cessful recall. And it can be able use for the children learners too.

I agree with the teaching and learning strategy of the TPR because this method makes them happy and not easily bored, especially making their psychology to work and take action, where actions were related to the target language we want to accomplish. TPR also makes their students do not stress to learn the language because this method makes the student tried to participate, analyze, or mimic language habits.

Total Physical Response (TPR) is a good active studying in exploring the student’s motoric aspect. It is a good way to make student memorize easily. TPR is suitable for teaching inversion sentence, for example. But it doesn’t work to explore speaking skill, because the student just listen and do the instruction.

TPR is fun, TPR is a panacea to solve all problems. The instructor continues day after day, until the students are exhausted and mutiny with, “Please, not another direction. Can’t we do something else.” At this point the instructor concludes, “Hey, this TPR is only good at the beginning.” Of course, this is an illusion. The tool can be used at all levels to help students internalize new vocabulary and grammatical features. But, this requires a conservative application of this powerful tool. Sure, use it in the beginning to catapult students into the target language, then withdraw the technique and save it for future use downstream in training. This is the skillful use of TPR.

I think,, TPR is so Fun learning because when the teacher teaching student they can be enjoy And so the children and adults experience the thrill of immediate understanding when you apply this powerful concept in the classroom. And so how to do it steps by step, games, teacher Kits, student kits, etc. This technique usefull to children learners.
so TPR is based on the premise that the human brain has a biological program for acquiring any natural language on earth – including the sign language of the deaf. The process is visible when we observe how infants internalize their first language.

so this technique is included with every word of action. I think the technique is very rarely used in topical classroom teachers. whereas the language that is easy to remember is the language used in everyday life. children will be more interested again when in the game include that there are elements of competition. when they use it teaches language support and included games are enjoyed, without realizing they are learning a lot and they really understand even without them knowing it. so I very much agree with this method.

TPR seems to work effectively for children and adults. There is no age barrier. The only caveat is that if the language training starts after puberty, the probability is almost certain that one will have at least some accent in speaking the second language, no matter how many years one lives in the foreign country.

My opinion about TPR I think learning the TPR was very good because students easily grasp the material provided by the teacher, because learning it in practice TPR directly so students easily remember and directly use in their daily lives.

My opinion about this method is an effective method for beginner level learners because by applying this method of learning English is taught oral speaking skills, improve listening skills of students, to motivate students to actively learn, especially in the movement, students increase confidence, improve interaction between teachers and students and make learning more enjoyable. In applying this method the stimulus and response can be seen clearly. Students act as the agent in charge of listening to what is conveyed by the instructor (teacher) is called the stimulus and the response is when students express instructions from the teacher with the movement or physical response. Teacher as instructor must set the course of learning to active student learning. Learning should be active with supporting facilities, fun learning situation thus the goal will be reached and students will be more creative. This method can also improve students’ understanding of vocabulary because after listening instructions the students will record the instructions in their memory then they also will increase vocabulary.
    Thanks miss.

Total Physical Response is a language learning method based on the coordination of speech and action. It was developed by James Asher, a professor of psychology at San Jose State University, California. It is linkedto the trace theory of memory, which holds that the more often or intensively a memory connection is traced, the stronger the memory will be.

    Approach
    Theory of language
Asher does not directly adress his view of languag, but Richards and Rodgers state that the labeling and ordering of classroom activities seem to be build on the structural view of language.

    Theory of learning
    Asher’s language learning theories seem similar to those of other behavioral psychologists. There are three principles he elaborates;

Second language learning is parallel to first language learning and should reflect the same naturalistic processes

    Listening should develop before speaking
Children respond physically to spoken language, and adult learners learn better if they do that too
Once listening comprehension has been developed, speech devlops naturally and effortlessly out of it.

Adults should use right-brain motor activities, while the left hemisphere watches and learns

    Delaying speech reduces stress.

    Design
     Objectives
Here are some of the objectives of Total Physical Response
Teaching oral proficiency at a beginning level
Using comprehension as a means to speaking
Using action-based drills in the imperative form

    The syllabus
TPR uses a sentence-based grammatical syllabus.

Types of learning techniques and activities
Activitis where a command is given in the imperative and the students obey the command isthe main activity in TPR.

    Procedure
Asher gives step-by step accounts of how to use TPR for English or other languages.

in my opinion Total Physical Response (TPR) is the name given to a learning strategy which has been developed
and promoted by Professor James Asher of San José State University in California..It is now being
practised successfully by many teachers all over the world. Its scope, however, seems limited: it is not
known to be used beyond beginner level. The basic technique of TPR is simple. Learners act out commands given by the teacher or their
fellow pupils (at a later stage). These commands, or series of commands, are simple at the beginning
(stand up, sit down) but after some time they may become more complex (I want the boys to stand in a circle
please). A TPR sequence can be a chain of actions relating to a compound task (take pen and paper, sit
down, begin at the top of your paper, write down: Dear …) or even contain a story-line.
Learning to understand and respond to language physically is something all – normally gifted –
learners can do well. As a result they feel successful as a student and they experience the enjoyment
of easy learning (in the first year or so). They are usually surprised about the speed with which they
learn to understand English.Total Physical Response can be an integral part of any English lesson, especially at beginner level.
During the first few weeks of an English starter course at school TPR may even be the main activity
that the learners are involved in. A ‘bookless’ period impresses upon the learners the notion that
language is basically meaningful sound (rather than words on paper).

in my opinion: the teacher who use total physical response (TPR) for learning students it’s very good, because it make student more easily in understanding the instruction of teacher and it make student more active

TPR is good for young learner, because they can learn from command. In TPR Grammar is not taught explicitly, but is induced from the language input.

Total Physical Response (TPR) is a language learning method based on the coordination of speech and action.
A typical TPR activity might contain instructions such as “Walk to the door”, “Open the door”, “Sit down” and “Give Maria your dictionary”. The students are required to carry out the instructions by physically performing the activities. Given a supportive classroom environment, there is little doubt that such activities can be both motivating and fun, and it is also likely that with even a fairly limited amount of repetition basic instructions such as these could be assimilated by the learners, even if they were unable to reproduce them accurately themselves.
I think TPR have Advantages :
    It is fun and easy
It does not require a great deal of preparation on the part of the teacher.
It is a good tool for learning vocabulary.
Class size does not need to be a problem.
There is no age barrier. and also,
    Disadvantages:
It is not a very creative method. Students are not given the opportunity to express their own views and thoughts in a creative way.
It is easy to overuse TPR.
It is limited, since everything cannot be explained with this method. It must be combined with other approaches.
TPR can be used to practice and teach various things. It is well suited to teaching classroom language and other vocabulary connected with actions. It can be used to teach imperatives and various tenses and aspects. It is also useful for story-telling.Because of its participatory approach, TPR may also be a useful alternative teaching strategy for students. okey.. I tinink that it my oppinion for TPR, wish can be alternative learning method for others. Thanks for yur attention mrs..

TPR is aptitude-free. Academic aptitude is a negligible factor when TPR is applied by a skilled and talented teacher. In a traditional language program, principals screen “low” academic students from foreign language classes under the assumption that, “They simply can’t do it!” Everyone is surprised when disadvantaged children who experience difficulty in class after class in a traditional school, enjoy success in a TPR class. These students experience the exhilaration of being competitive with the all “A” students.

my opinion about TPR, total physical response is A teaching technique whereby a learner (usually young learner) responds to language input with body motions. This could be, for example, the acting out a chant. This technique was devised by James Asher who noted that children listen and respond with guestures before they speak. One benefit is that TPR allows for low anxiety learning since students don’t have the stress of producing language. ‘Robot’ is an example of a TPR activity, where the teacher commands her robots to do some task in the classroom. Acting out stories and giving imperative commands are common TPR activities. Great for early stages but difficult to teach complex language.

I think TPR methode is an effective method to teach language especially, it is simple and and easy in terms of the use of language and also contain a movement game so that it can burn off stress on learner because the problems faced in classes, especially when studying a language, and also can create our positive mood on the learner who can facilitate learning that can increase the motivation and the achievement of students in language learning.

in my opinion the students’ understanding of english should be developed before speaking by TPR method and they can initially learn one part of the language by moving their bodies.

in this method the teacher is able to apply the learning methods appropriate to the characteristics of learners.
    a. Attention students can be more focused.
    b. Student learning more focused on the material being studied.
    c. Experiences and impressions as a result of learning more attached to the student.

    Thank you,,,

I think TPR more importance for the children, because exercise their skill, especially in speaking skill.Total Physical Response is a language learning method based on the coordination of speech and action.
    -It is a lot of fun. Learners enjoy it, and this method can be a real stirrer in the class. It lifts the pace and the mood;
    -It is very memorable. It does assist students to recognize phrases or words;
    -It is good for kinaesthetic learners who are required to be active in the class;
    -It can be used both in large or small classes. In this case, it is no matter to have how many students you have as long as you are prepared to take the lead, the learners will follow;
    -It works well with mixed-ability classes. The physical actions get across the meaning effectively so that all the learners are able to comprehend and apply the target language;
    -It is no need to have a lot of preparation or materials using the TPR. In this regard, as long as you are competent of what you want to practise (a rehearsal beforehand can help), it will not take a lot of time to get ready;
-It is very effective with teenagers and young learners; and
    -It involves both left and right-brained learning;

    * TPR can be used to teach their vocabulary connected with actions (smile, chop, headache, wriggle),grammatival items, including tenses past/present/future and continuous aspects (Every morning I clean my teeth, I make my bed, I eat breakfast),classroom language (Open your books), a imperativesi Instructions (Stand up, close you eyes) and storry telling.

I think TPR (Totally Physical Response) IS A Language Learning Method for Effective Enough Students. because language is a key determinant to success and have a central role, especially in the development of the intellectual, social, and emotional learning and in all fields of study. Language intended to help someone in this case I am talking about is the learners to know themselves, their culture and the cultures of others, express ideas and feelings, participate in the community who use the language, find and use analytical skills and imaginative in him.

I think Total Physical Response ( TPR ) is the one of good methods. Because TPR is simple method we only use slightly materials this method only work for grade 1 till 4 in junior high school. But TPR method not really work at teaching because we must have slightly students and we must have full control for our class. Maybe enough for my comment, thank you for you attention mrs.
